When God calls Moses to be a prophet and the leader of His people, it’s not just a commissioning. It’s a table read. What I mean by that is that God isn’t speaking vaguely to Moses, saying “go back to Egypt and do this general work of setting my people free in some way that you’ll have to figure out on your own.” It’s a table read where God invites Moses to sit down and read the script of the Exodus story. God invites Moses to hear and know every twist and turn, every step of the journey. God essentially tells Moses, “this is the story of me liberating my people through you. It’s going to end with them arriving in the promised land. Pharaoh is the enemy. He will hate you and oppose you. He will refuse to let the people go. But I will conquer him. So don’t be afraid. This is how everything is going to go.”

Don’t you be afraid either. Because when God calls you to follow His Son, when our Lord makes you His own child and blesses you to be a Christian, it’s not just a commission. It’s a table read. When you were baptized, God brought you up to the top of His holy mountain and declared to you, “this is the story of me liberating you from the hands of the devil. Satan has already been defeated, but he’s going to rage against you. He’s going to try to steal everything I placed in your hands. He won’t succeed. My Son, Jesus Christ, will continue to keep you safe from the beast He has already crushed. And no matter how much terror surrounds you, I will never abandon you. Don’t be afraid. This is how everything is going to go.”

So remember that table read. Remember that story. No matter how much uncertainty and confusion surround you, you don’t need to be uncertain or confused about the love of God. He made it yours forever through the blood of His Son. Jesus Christ has conquered and will never let anyone snatch you out of His hand. No matter how much hardship howls around you, the story of salvation will never change. You will win because Jesus Christ already has.
