When this official from Capernaum hears that Jesus is in Cana, he rushes out to find Him, to beg Jesus to spare his son’s life. Now, it’s important to know that Cana and Capernaum are about 25 miles apart, quite the journey on foot. His son is near death and he’s off running a marathon trying to find a cure instead of staying by his son’s side. It’s an act of faith, to be sure, but it’s also rather rash and impulsive. The man is consumed with fear, with fidgety terror.  So there’s an obvious sense of desperation and panic in this man.

But there is no desperation or panic with Jesus. This terror that is consuming this powerless official, Jesus can end it all with a word from His lips. And He does. The Son of God who can create and uncreate, who can kill and make alive with His speech alone, He is not afraid. He is not flustered or uncertain of how to solve anything. He’s not panicking. So don’t you panic either.

Be at peace. No matter how far it seems your Savior is from the anguish of your heart, be it 25 miles it or 25 million, the One who died for your sins and rose for your justification can still hear you. He knows your needs. And He can kill your every sorrow with nothing but the words from His lips. Pray, but don’t panic.
