It’s a dangerous thing when a man tells himself, “I’m a simple man.” Some men aren’t fancy or sophisticated. And that’s fine. But no man is simple. Every man’s desires are complex. Every man’s heart longs for something not easily understood because every man longs to have union with the God who can only be understood in the words of Scriptures. The purposes of every man’s heart are like deep water, and only the man of understanding will draw it out.

“I’m a simple man. I don’t need all that lofty philosophy or that complex theology. I don’t care about the grand questions of the universe. I just need the simple things in life. My heart isn’t deep water. It’s not undiscovered territory. I know the things I want in my life. I just want enough money to be happy, a full stomach, a little respect, and some peace and quiet.”

So the fool tells himself. But the fool doesn’t know his own heart. Money will not satisfy you. The comforts of this life will not satisfy you. The reason you like peace and quiet is because your heart wants to drive away everything that can’t really fulfill you and focus on what will. And if you won’t stare into the depths of your heart’s waters, then no amount of peace and quiet will give you lasting peace.

So look to Christ and you’ll find the man of understanding who has drawn the answers out of your heart by giving you the righteousness of His. Your heart will not rest until you are righteous. And Jesus has placed that righteousness into your hands with His death and resurrection, with your baptism into the Triune name. Your heart will not rest until you belong to your Creator, until you have peace with your God. And through that same death and resurrection, Jesus has given you that peace. As His resurrected flesh emerged from the tomb on the third day, He drew out from the depths the gift of eternal life, and He made it your own.
